On the occasion of its third anniversary, Derik's Chess School has many achievements to boast of

Kids who have done Derik's Chess School proud

ANNIVERSARIES ARE an important milestone in both the lifespan of an institution and an individual. Derik's Chess School (DCS), the only professional chess training institute of coastal belt, is celebrating its third anniversary.

Viani D'Cunha (8-1/2) of St. Aloysius Primary School, Mangalore, a product of the DCS has become the youngest FIDE rated player of Karnataka, with a FIDE rating of 2054. Coinciding with the anniversary of the school, this feat of Viani has come as a morale booster for not only his teammates, but also for the management of the institution. The school is administered by FIDE rated player, Deric Pinto and national arbiter, Prasanna Rao. Over the last three years, it has nurtured more than 300 players all over Karnataka, producing many state, national, and international level players.

According to Mr. Rao, the success achieved can be attributed to exceptional support by the chess fraternity, the patrons and the hard work put forth by the players themselves. Various training camps over the years, championships, open tournaments, support and guidance from senior players of the institution has helped the school scale greater heights in the world of chess. Players such as Viani are the result of this systematic effort. FIDE rated players of DCS Mr. Rao said Vikram Saralaya of T.A. Pai English Medium High School was the first to achieve the rating amongst DCS students. His FIDE rating is 2086. Pallavi Maiya of Canara Girls High School, created history by becoming the first woman player in the state to have a FIDE rating of 1992. Gahan M.G. (9-1/2) of Canara Primary School also has a FIDE rating of 2040, and is the youngest rated player after Viani.

Prakash V.Rao of Canara Urva High School has a FIDE rating of 2036. Prajwal D'Silva of St. Theresa Convent School has earned a FIDE rating of 1998. Stating that more players were waiting in the wings to complete their rating performance in the coming nationals, Mr. Rao highlighted performance of his wards in important events. Pallavi won the fourth place in U-14 girls category, and Viani won the fifth place in U-10 boys category, in Asian Youth Chess Championships, Calicut. Vikram won the gold medal in the team event of U-17 Boys category in National Level Inter School Chess Championships organised by School Games Federation of India, at New Delhi. Irol Pinto of St. Agnes High School won gold in U-17 girl's category in national level inter-school event, organised by School Games Federation of India at New Delhi.

Viani stood fifth in the national under-9 boys chess championships held at Calicut. Pratheeka G. of Canara Urva High School stood 16th in the national sub-junior girls chess championship held at Calicut. This fine performance of Pratheeka in a premier championship helped her qualify for the national sub-junior girl's super league, where she finished a creditable 13th, Mr. Rao explained.

Likewise, the wards of DCS have also excelled in state championships with Pratheeka winning the under-17 girls' category in the state level inter-school chess championship, held at Birur. Vishwas Saralaya of T.A. Pai English Medium School, won the boys' under-14 category also in state level inter-school chess championship held at Birur. Pallavi has won the state under-18 girls chess championships held at Davangere. Reflecting on few special performances, he said Pratheeka created history by winning inter-district level, open rapid chess tournament held at B.C. Road. She is the first woman player to win an open tournament in Dakshina Kannada, in the presence of many senior players. Vikram Saralaya won the combined district level open rapid chess tournament held at Karkala, again in the presence of bigwigs of the district.

Mr. Rao said junior players of DCS have created a new trend of playing in seniors' group, putting behind them the junior's category.
