SHARATH GORE WINS 29TH MONSOON CHESS TITLE


Sharath Gore of S.D. M College, Ujire has won the title in the 29th Monsoon Chess Tournament organized by Vivekananda College, Puttur from 2nd to 4th August 2008.

He scored 7 points winning in all 7 rounds. Second place was bagged by another unbeaten player Kaushik R of Canara College, Mangalore (6 points) and third place was bagged by Mohammed Nizam of St Philomena College (6 points).

In all 97 players of Degree, Engineering and Medical Colleges from the D.K, Udupi and Coorg districts had taken part in this prestigious event. 19 women players also had taken part in this 7 round swiss tournament. Gayathri K.N of Vivekananda College won the Best Women player prize.

List of others among top ten: Ganesh Kumar ( Canara College, Mangalore- 5.5 points), C.H.Birbal ( Alva’s College, Moodbidri-5.5 points), Gayatrhi ( Vivekananda College-5.5 points), Vijesh ( Vivekananda College-5.5 points), Keerthi Shetty ( Milagres College, Kallianpur- 5.5 points), Delvin ( SMS College, Brahmavar-5.5 points), Adarsh Kote (Vivekananda Engineering College-5 points).

Prof. M.U Prabhakar, Vice Principal, Vivekananda College distributed cash prize and trophies to the winners. The event was coordinated by Ravishankar V.S, Physical Director, Vivekananda College. Prasanna Rao, Mangalore was the chief arbiter of the tournament.

Kaushik wins title in " Blitz Chess Festival"

Kaushik R of Canara College has claimed title in the first Blitz Chess Festival organised at Tagore Park, Lighthouse Hill, Mangalore on Sunday.

He scored against Ganesh Kumar of Ramakrishna College in the final round to win the honour. Ganesh Kumar was placed runner up. 3rd place was jointly shared by Suraj Prabhu and Kiran A, both from Canara Boys High School. Krupa Jain of SVS, Bantwal won the Best Girl prize. Chisel Pais, Ladyhill english medium school was placed 2nd. Nearly hundred players had taken part in the event amidst the heavy rain. The event was organised under the auspices of D.K District Administration.

Earlier the event was inaugurated by Sri Balakrishna, RTO Officer, Chitradurga. Smt Archana Nayak, Smt Jyothi Rao and Sri Deric Pinto were also present on the occasion.

Prizes were distributed by Sri Ganesh Rao, Chairman, Karavali Group of Colleges; D.K Deputy Commissioner Sri Maheshwara Rao; Smt Pragna Maheshwara Rao; Sri Anand Shetty, President, Mangalore Press Club; Smt Chaya Kamath, Entrepreneur.

Sri Maheshwara Rao congratulated the winners and briefed future plans about developing 'Mini Chess Park' with Permanent Chess structures. Sri Ganesh Rao, in his address praised the efforts of the Chess Park which is first of its kind in India. Tournament coordinators Sri Deric Pinto and Sri Srinivas Nayak Indaje were also present on the dais.

Honorable Chief Minister Sri Kumaraswami and Honorable Deputy Chief Minister Sri Yadiyurappa played symbolic chess moves on the board to inaugurate 'Mini Chess Park' in City's Tagore Park.

After the inauguration Chief Minister in his address praised the efforts to start Chess Park to popularize the intellectual game among public and wished all the success. District In charge Minister Sri Nagaraja Shetty; D.K District Deputy Commissioner Sri Maheshwara Rao; Sri Srinivas Nayak Indaje, Vice President, CADK; Sri Prasanna Rao, Secretary, CADK; Sri Deric Pinto, Administrator, Derik's Chess School were also present on the occasion.

After the inauguration young upcoming talents of the district- Adith jagadish, Nihal Manjunath, Anantharam R U, Sharan rao, Andrea D'souza and other players played chess games to enthrall the public.

D.K District Administration in association with Combined D.K District Chess Association (CADK) and Derik's Chess School has planned to arrange for the Mini Chess Park in Tagore Park to encourage public to learn and play this intellectual game and also planned to provide opportunities to talented players to display their skills.

As per the vision of Deputy Commissioner concrete chess boards will be constructed for the public to play chess. Also there will be weekend training sessions by Derik's Chess School exclusively for the public. The 'Mini Chess Park' will be first of its kind in India.
