Sharath Gore of S.D. M College, Ujire has won the title in the 29th Monsoon Chess Tournament organized by Vivekananda College, Puttur from 2nd to 4th August 2008.
He scored 7 points winning in all 7 rounds. Second place was bagged by another unbeaten player Kaushik R of Canara College, Mangalore (6 points) and third place was bagged by Mohammed Nizam of St Philomena College (6 points).
In all 97 players of Degree, Engineering and Medical Colleges from the D.K, Udupi and Coorg districts had taken part in this prestigious event. 19 women players also had taken part in this 7 round swiss tournament. Gayathri K.N of Vivekananda College won the Best Women player prize.
List of others among top ten: Ganesh Kumar ( Canara College, Mangalore- 5.5 points), C.H.Birbal ( Alva’s College, Moodbidri-5.5 points), Gayatrhi ( Vivekananda College-5.5 points), Vijesh ( Vivekananda College-5.5 points), Keerthi Shetty ( Milagres College, Kallianpur- 5.5 points), Delvin ( SMS College, Brahmavar-5.5 points), Adarsh Kote (Vivekananda Engineering College-5 points).
Prof. M.U Prabhakar, Vice Principal, Vivekananda College distributed cash prize and trophies to the winners. The event was coordinated by Ravishankar V.S, Physical Director, Vivekananda College. Prasanna Rao, Mangalore was the chief arbiter of the tournament.
